NO-COOKIE POLICY

The Small File Media Society builds small, quiet software. That extends to how we treat you. We use no tracking cookies, no analytics, and no advertising. There is no advertising network watching you here, no fingerprinting, and no third-party scripts logging your visit. You can read, watch, and browse without being counted. The only cookie that may ever be set is a strictly necessary security cookie from our security provider, described below, and it is never used to track you.

This page explains, in plain terms, what that means. It also covers the small number of cases where you actively choose to send us information. It applies to this website (smallfile.ca) and to our Pixel Squisher mobile app.

WHAT WE DON'T DO

We think it is easier to trust a policy that starts with what does not happen. On this website and in our app:

  • We do not use advertising or analytics cookies. We set no cookies ourselves. The only possible exception is a strictly necessary security cookie from our security provider, used only to keep the site safe.
  • We do not use Google Analytics or any other analytics or measurement service.
  • We do not use advertising networks, and we do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers.
  • We do not fingerprint your device or build a profile of you.
  • We do not track you across other websites or apps.
  • We do not require you to create an account to browse the site or use the app.

WHAT WE COLLECT (ONLY WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO SEND IT)

There are a few moments where you can deliberately send us information. In every case, it is because you chose to, by filling in a form or submitting a work. We never collect any of this in the background.

Festival Submissions

When you submit a work to the festival, we collect the information you enter into the submission form, such as your name, email address, city, country, links you provide, and details about your film, along with the film file and still image you upload. We use this solely to review, program, promote, and archive the festival. Submission files and information are stored using Google Firebase. We keep submissions for our records and archive, and you can ask us to remove yours at any time.

Emails You Send Us

If you email us, we receive your message and email address. We use this only to reply and to keep any correspondence relevant to your inquiry. We don't add you to any mailing list without your clear consent.

Small File TV Access Codes

Some Small File TV playlists are protected by a code. When you enter a code, it is checked against our records to unlock that playlist for your current session. This check happens in memory and is not stored on your device. There is no cookie, and closing the tab clears it.

Pixel Squisher App

Pixel Squisher compresses your videos on your own device. The app does not require an account and does not track your usage. If you choose to submit a compressed video to the festival through the app, that submission is handled exactly as described under "Festival Submissions" above. Videos you compress but do not submit never leave your device.

HOW UPLOADS AND FORMS ARE HANDLED

Our website is hosted by Netlify, and file uploads and submissions are stored using Google Firebase. These providers may process limited technical information (such as your IP address) as a normal part of delivering web pages and receiving uploads. This is standard server infrastructure, not tracking by us, and we do not use it to identify or profile you. Both providers act as our processors and are bound by their own security and privacy commitments.

Form submissions may trigger a notification email to our team so we know a new submission has arrived. That email contains only the details you submitted.

SECURITY (CLOUDFLARE)

We use Cloudflare to protect the website from attacks and malicious traffic. When you visit, your request passes through Cloudflare before it reaches us. To do its job, Cloudflare sees technical information such as your IP address and basic request details, and uses it to keep the site secure. We do not use Cloudflare to track you, advertise to you, or build a profile of you.

Cloudflare's basic security does not set tracking cookies. If Cloudflare needs to tell a real visitor apart from an automated bot, it may set a strictly necessary security cookie for that purpose. This kind of cookie exists only to keep the site safe. It is not used for advertising or analytics, and it does not follow you to other sites.

YOUR RIGHTS

Because we hold so little, there is little to manage. The information you do send us remains yours. You can ask us to access, correct, or delete any information you've submitted, and we'll do so promptly. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR (Europe), PIPEDA (Canada), or the CCPA (California). We honour these no matter where you are.

To make any request, or to ask a question about this policy, email us at [email protected].

CHILDREN

Our website and app are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.

CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

If we ever change how we handle information, we'll update this page and revise the date above. If we ever introduced anything that tracked you, which we have no intention of doing, we would say so here, clearly and before it took effect.
