A letter from Dr. Radek Przedpełski!

Dear Friends,

If you happen to be in Shanghai—or have access to Tencent Meeting—do come join my talk and discussion on art and chaosmotechnics. This Substantial Motion Research Network event is kindly hosted by Dr. Siying Duan, professor at the Center for Critical Theory Studies in the School of Arts at Shanghai University.

First of all, I would like to thank Siying for her enthusiasm for this project, dialogue and hospitality!

Embarking on a dialogue with works of Laura Marks and Yuk Hui, as well as Polish art historian Jerzy Ludwiński’s (1930-2000) theory of art as an energetic mountain, my lecture will be drawing an alternave constellation of ecomedia tranductively connecting:

(1) what I call an ‘esoteric conceptualism’, i.e. neo-avant-garde performance practices in the Polish People’s Republic, and

(2) small-file media, i.e. the ecological digital media format of no more than 1.44 MB/minute in online transmission invented by Laura Marks, who founded the annual Small File media festival in order to promote sustainability in creative media making.

I would like to use this opportunity to publicise the call for works—June 15th, 2024—for the 2024 Festival’s festive fifth interation hosted by The Cinematheque and SFU School for the Contemporary Arts scheduled for October 18-19, 2014.

It gives me a great pleasure to present, as part of the lecture, the Think Crazy! artistic strategy of esoteric conceptualist and performance Marek Konieczny (1936-2022). Konieczny has been, to this very day, marginalised by mainstream art-historical discourse and I hope to change this by giving visibility to his practices. I am also currently writing a monograph on Marek Konieczny’s work.
