Small File Web Art Workshop

The Small File Media Festival is so excited to take part in this year’s Our Networks conference on July 27! Join us at 11am for Tiny Dreams, an interactive workshop on creating small footprint and small-file web art led by Joni Schinkel and Dr. Yani Kong.
Our Networks is a conference about the past, present, and future of building our own network infrastructures. In this sixth edition, the event explores what collaboration and online presence looks like when a network is optional.
Drawing on practices of local-first, solar-powered servers, folk software, and permacomputing, we will investigate histories, tools, and approaches that allow us to reframe computing and break from always-on connectivity.
Technologies and devices used for web hosting account for 3.7% of the world’s carbon emissions today, and we are responding by sharing data-negligible ecomedia techniques, creative image compression pipelines, and innovative lofi media alternatives. In this workshop, learn about ‘folk web’ creation techniques and reclaim websites as an offline or local network medium. Draw from permacomputing philosophies and experiment with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build sustainable and accessible web content.
